Day 6: Most Underrated Moment
Season 5 / Episode 18 “The Werewolf Transformation”
Penny: Sheldon, I promise I know what I’m doing. Please let me cut your hair.
Sheldon: Amy, what do you think?
When Sheldon turns to Amy with sincere interest in her opinion over whether or not to allow Penny to cut his hair, it was incredibly endearing to me. This is Dr. Sheldon Cooper, a man who knows his mind and is militant about the personal set of rules he lives by. The opinions of others hardly sway him and rarer still does he actually solicit an opinion from anyone.
YET … Amy’s opinion matters, it holds value because she is valuable to him. Let’s be honest, if Amy had said “No way Jose! It’s too risky!” Sheldon would have listened too. Albeit stubborn and downright petulant, Sheldon continually seeks Amy’s input and takes her advice when offered. Two additional examples that spring to mind (out of several) is her practical insight regarding fundraising (where we see Sheldon’s obvious jealousy over Feisal) and her encouraging Sheldon to offer Penny praise for assisting him with “Fun with Flags”. He heeds her because Amy is knowledgeable and knows how present her view. You can see him repeatedly consider and then connect to it. She’s a vixen.
The exchange between them in this particular scene is short and basically a setup for Amy’s joke, but the way he looks up at her with absolute trust and the way she leans down sweetly to reassure him … *sigh* … I think is a great example of the kind of intimacy Sheldon was talking about in TLSP. Trust and kindness—these are the seeds that eventually bloom into unconditional love. Oh, and let’s not forget that the music took him to Amy. Not the comic book store, not Caltech, but his girlfriend’s apartment.
Sheldon’s heart knows what it wants, but Sheldon is going to be the last to find out.
